George Calombaris joins Blue September
Former ‘Chef of the Year 2008’, Bowel Cancer Australia Ambassador and reality TV judge George Calombaris opens up about his father’s fights with cancer and how he hopes to use his newfound fame.Celebrity chef George Calombaris has overcome more than his fair share of difficulties, achieving more at 31 than most people do in a lifetime. But two of the experiences that he holds dearest are those of his father Jim, who has twice survived bouts with bowel cancer, inspiring George to do his own part to encourage people to ‘face up to men’s cancer’.
In an exclusive Blue September interview, the Masterchef judge and Bowel Cancer Australia Ambassador talked about the strength it takes to beat cancer, twice, and joked about the ‘little cooking show’ he was on, while talking more seriously about wanting to extend the opportunities he has to influence people to get out of the kitchen, and encourage men to get healthy.
‘Through painting my face a little bit blue, which is really painless, it’s hopefully going to make guys aware that they do need to get themselves checked up, that they do need to stay healthy, and that they can live a long life,’ he said, while having his own face painted for the campaign.
George is a strong supporter of Blue September. As well as appearing in the community service announcements for the campaign (see the CSA) he is hosting the 2010 Blue September Launch at his prestigious restaurant, The Press Club, in Melbourne. He is creating a unique menu for the night and hopes to use the event to reach as many people as possible.
“It’s an awareness thing at the end of the day, we want people to think about what position they are in and what they need to do to look after themselves,” said George.
Blue September is a national fundraising and awareness initiative, proudly supporting the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and Bowel Cancer Australia. The goal is to raise funds for cancer research, as well as helping men reduce the risk of cancer by making healthy lifestyle choices.
