CANCER ranks as one of the country's greatest health problems and continues to claim the lives of more than 22,000 Australian men each year.

Blue September, a nationwide campaign that aims to raise research funds and promote awareness of men's cancers throughout the month of September, encourages men to take preventative measures against cancer and establish an active role in the maintenance of their health.

Tackling one of the country's most prominent health problems head on, Blue September project manager, Sarah Campbell, said that male cancer awareness was particularly important because men are less likely to visit the doctor than their female counterparts. "We're trying to encourage men to be more proactive in the maintenance of their health.

The Blue September initiative urges men to go for regular check ups, eat more healthily and look after themselves in the sun. Prevention is key and a lot of common cancers can be prevented through healthy living," she said. Friday, September 3, marks Blue September's national fundraising day and Australians will be called to show their support in a variety of ways.

Aussies can contribute in a variety of ways from organising school fundraisers or simply wearing something blue to promote awareness on the issue. Participants are encouraged to take photos of their Blue September fundraising and awareness ideas and upload them onto the website, www.blueseptember.org.au, for a chance to win prizes.

Some Blue September "Take Action" tips to help reduce the risk of common cancers include quitting smoking, taking care when outdoors and in the sun, aiming for a healthy body weight, participating in regular physical activity, reducing alcohol intake and having age-appropriate check ups, including colonoscopies for men over 50 years of age.
